After reading this article, you should be able to come up with more creative and effective ways to teach your kids about mental arithmetic.

Now, when your little ones are learning mental arithmetic, it is important to remember that they need to get their practice as much as they can. Mental arithmetic is a learned skill- this is not innate and not something that they can develop overnight.

You should also remember that you can help them a lot when they are learning mental arithmetic- regardless of whether they are learning mental arithmetic through a course or book or if they are actually attending mental arithmetic lessons in a school or tutorial centre.

Okay, now, let’s talk about the three places where you can teach your kids mental arithmetic. I would also like to point out that there are a lot more methods or scenarios where you can teach your kids different mental arithmetic. The more you practice them, the easier and faster they’ll master the different mental arithmetic techniques.

The Grocery Store

The best way to really learn mental arithmetic is to apply it in real world scenarios. And what could more “real world” than the grocery store, right?

When you’re there, you should let your kid add and subtract the prices of the different items you are shopping for. You could add your own little “dare” here to make it more interesting for them. You could tell them they can add a candy bar or some chips to your cart if they can get the right sum.

The Restaurant

Obviously, the same rules would apply here. When your family is dining out, you should play a game where you and your kids will have an “Estimate Game” where you’ll all estimate how much the total will will be. The person with the closest estimate to the actual game will receive a prize.

The Home

Of course, your home is the best place to practice your kids mental arithmetic lesson. You could use a lot of things in your home! Look around and you will find yourself surrounded with different things you can use for an impromptu problem solving game with your kids.

Learning mental arithmetic can be both an enriching experience for you and your children. Use this as an opportunity to build a stronger relationship.
