Three Stages of Abacus Mental Math

If you want to learn more about the growing popularity of the abacus mental math method of learning, then you’ll want to read about this. Specifically, we will talk about the three stages of learning abacus mental math. Of course, we will also talk a little about the benefits of abacus mental math.

Since it was invented in Ancient China, the abacus has been one of the best counting tools that man has ever created. In fact, it is so good and accurate that there are still some shops that use the abacus. But we’re not here to talk about that!

Abacus mental math is one of the most effective methods of learning mental arithmetic. It is very helpful in developing a child’s creative and logical side.

Now, since we will be talking about the different stages of learning abacus mental math, it is important to note that the best time to study the abacus mental math method is at the age of six to 10. A lot of studies have proven that the earlier a child is exposed to the concepts involved in using the abacus, the faster and better they will be able to master mental arithmetic.

1. Foundation Stage

At the foundation stage, kids will be physically using the abacus. At this level, about 20 to 30 minutes a day would be enough to help them be familiar with each bead and column. This is very important so they can quickly master the abacus.

2. Semi-Abstract Stage

At this stage, the physical use of the abacus would be slowly taken away from them. Some abacus mental math teachers would actually let students use a photo of an abacus. They would do the movements and regrouping of the beads with their minds.

3. Abstract Stage

As you can guess, in the abstract stage, a kid would be able to do calculations without using an actual or a paper abacus. At this stage, they already know each bead and column of the abacus by heart so they can easily and quickly do mental calculations.

Learning the abacus mental math does take some time. But the rewards would be nothing but beneficial for your kids. It is a very good way for them to be more visual.

In a world where everything is run by machines and technology, knowing a technique that doesn’t depend on batteries or WiFi signal can really help your children to not be too dependent on technology.

Aside from that, with the abacus mental math method, your kids would certainly have something to brag and be proud about- not everyone can do calculations mentally!
