Working Holidays

I miss this part of me. I miss writing relentlessly not minding my grammar and I just want to blurt it out like I used to. I do not care if you get to understand everything or you don't.

I thought I was lucky to get this deal. Change that, I am happy to get that deal but not to the extent that I am gonna be working for the holidays. Or should I consider that it is part of that deal? So alright, I was just not ready to change my sleeping habits to something like a vampire or creature of the night.

I got myself into this so I would to stay and endure it. Even if I was told put my hands off the project, I can not turn my back on it. I need this done and I will be part of it even if I don't do it 100% because some people placed their trust on my leadership.

Great! Life sucks and who wouldn't know it doesn't. Surprises and surprises...and I am pretty sure there's more to come.

BPO HR Forum

I have been writing about working at MTC Academy and its nature of business that it is a medical transcription school. Now, MTC Academy has a sister company, ZipIT Solutions, Inc., which is primarily a medical transcription service organization.

On the first year that we've operated MTC Academy in Davao, there were a lot of curious people asking what is medical transcription. After a year and a half, people were asking where can they apply. My boss and I firmly believes that you don't give fish to people, instead teach them how to fish and so my boss initiated that there should be a transcription organization in Davao. So there is Transcription Alliance of Davao, Inc. (TADI) which is an organization of training providers, such as MTC Academy, and service providers, such as ZipIT Solutions, Inc.

Last August 29, at the Royal Mandaya Hotel, a discussion on both academes and employers on how to address a particular problem in recruitment or hiring. Although there was a drop on the number of enrollees which is mainly due to the economic problem, the real problem is job placement and why there's a little percentage of hiring?

I had my own taste of how it is to be unemployed. After so many job interviews you still don't get the job you applied for, especially the ones related to your course. At first I did not know that I have to have the basic skills. I just thought, I graduated from a prestigious school so I can easily be hired. I guess not! Because I simply don't give up, I landed on my first job after 5 years of being unemployed.

At the Jobs Fair at Sangguniang Panglungsod, last August 30-31, there are some applicants that would come to the employer's booth and would pass their resume without knowing the industry. I told myself that I was like that when I used to apply for a vacant position. Now I've realized it's a "No-No" to wear slippers, jeans, and as an applicant please let us not forget to at least look fresh and neat.

It is always good to have forums although some forums are really irrelevant.

Rainy Road Trip

It is supposed to be Sunday and I am supposed to be sleeping all day and watching TV but I got work to do. We, at MTC Academy, was invited to participate on a Jobs Fair at Digos City. We represented the ICT, Business and Medical Transcriptions and what are the jobs available for this sector. We love Digos because of it's yummy Rice Cake, Puto with Dinuguan and the Sotanghon.

As part of the marketing job that I am to do, I don't have a choice and since the only way to generate awareness and to continue the advocacy, even if it is Sunday I got to go there. I love to travel no matter how boring it is and for whatever is the purpose.

When we got to Digos, the weather seems to hate me and my boss, Wit Holganza, for it rained heavily and really not a good time for people to go to Jobs Fair. What we did, we bought handicrafts and green mangoes and of course, we hop in to the Agri Fair of the city to check on what's being displayed.

I Enjoyed Everything I Do, Do You?

Let us start with the basic. Why makes you do this and that?

My answer to that question is, I do this marketing job because this gives me the money that I am going to pay for the needs of my Dad. Other reasons are; I can buy food with this income, clothes, travel and others. The bottom line really is my Dad needs me. The only way I can give Dad my support is through working whether or not I like my day job. Dad is partially disable and I know he can still work but will not give him the opportunity to give his best for he can't move all his fingers at his left hand. I volunteered to be Dad's other income. I do pay for his light and water bills. Sometimes I give money for his food. Other thing Dad wants to have, like his vices, Dad gets through his own effort.

If you will ask me, I do not like marketing job. But if I keep thinking that I hate this job, I will not be productive. My needs down to my goal to help Dad will not be achieved. Even if I hate this job, there will always be something for me to learn. Something for me to be useful at and in time, I will be productive for this area.

The ability to do well on things I don't like is the main reason why I am happy right now. It may not be in terms of how much is my savings, it is terms of how many people I have helped through the process.

I looked at the future and not tomorrow's result. I am looking for ways to learn from it and not just them, my clients/prospects, learn from me. I do it for Dad, for me, for my other siblings. I enjoy everyday talk with different people. I enjoy smiling and saying Good morning/afternoon to anybody. I restrict my mind to thinking negative. I talk and join people with so much positive attitude in life.

Ironic because I never like the marketing job, but I do enjoy and love everything I do. Do you enjoy what you do?

Hardwork WASTED

"I was cranky since yesterday. I had this feeling that something will come up. I just don't want to lose my momentum for the Saturday's event.

I was born with adversities in life, and I was able to conquer all that because I had been the hard worker nobody would think of. I see life as a challenge that needs to be conquered through hard work and dedication. Although, there had been times that I was thrown to the mud, I stood up and walk again going through the same process with a brave heart that I will soon pass the bridge of uncertainty. Once on the other end, I felt successful no matter others may call me a fool.

So much with the belief that I can do it, I put myself at the bottom, giving others the recognition that I should have. I don't want them to tell me good job because it will distract me to my purpose. A purpose not on getting achievements in paper but achievement that when I am gone, others will think of the little ways I have done for them. I certainly do not want to do things for myself alone, but would like to do it with others who are somehow will benefit in what I do.

Yes, I call myself a hero. But a hero with no name. You can laugh, you can say something cruel, but you can never bring me down. That's me. The real me.

In my past years, I have grown to be someone with courage and pessimistic with all the things I do. Most of the times, I get scared because I know I am human. And if I am down, I blame entirely the me who decides and do what I think should be done. This time its different.

I worked hard on getting things run smoothly as possible. Ask the questions I needed to ask. The real deal is, I do not have enough knowledge what I am into but with trust to the people who are with me all the way, acknowledging that they have graduated in such prestigious schools with a lot of recognition. I put my name in front, for they need me to step forward and do the guerrilla work. I have placed my entire identify by talking to people one by one. People look me in the eye, trying to see something that may mean that I lied to them. I straighten my face with honesty and truthfulness that what I am saying is true.

I've set aside other responsibilities. Then, the day to reckon for the whole year, has come.
Two days before the event, a call was answered. Good thing I was the answering machine, saying the same line over and over again. A call that made my heart beat faster and my mind was saying, I knew this would happen. I did my best to make amends. I told myself to calm down, it will push through. I stayed focus and alert. I waited.

After telling my superior what happened, my superior said it is over. My heart devastated. I can feel the pain in my shoulders now. I can feel my mind explode. A tear rolled down my eye, Saturday's event is canceled.

From the first day I put my heart into the project and now I know it is needed to packed and kept hidden. Now I asked, what could have gone wrong? How come I didn't know about this? Did I forget to ask this?

I wanted to take all the blame but it can't be. I have done my part and it is quite obvious the other party did not. Only because of some assumptions, the other party thought it is not important to discuss. My hard work, my face, my words, proved to be all wrong. I was the guerrilla, not them. I was the one in contact, not them. I was the one who has back pains, not them.

It is a wasted effort. No pain, no gain.

(Will reflect on the subject more and soon I will write posts again)

Change your style

Businesses need to change its headline stories into something believable again. No, honest businesses don't make up stories. I call this innovation. It is like changing clothes everyday.

Whenever there is a new building located at the main street, 95% of the passers by get curios. So they come in and ask. Maybe some will spend a penny to try what's this new product is all about or what's this new service offered.

Few months after, people will forget what you have told them. Thus this mean the business has to close down too? It will if it will not change its style.

Honestly, that's the hardest part for me as a marketing assistant. I have to think of how to change the stories. Changing in a sense that this had happened and yet was neglected and it needs to be told now or else I wouldn't be able to help the company I am to grow.

My Love for Marketing

This is not the first time that I wrote about my work. It is the love month for me so I also would like to share my love for my work.

I work in a one man marketing department wherein the owner of the company is the president and my marketing supervisor. I thought, at first, I will have a hard time for I am not a 100% marketing person as compared to medical representatives that really had a good training in sales and marketing. That's what I thought, and I am 50% right and 50% wrong about my assumptions.

I love my current job. It gives me the chance to be creative, be always on the look out to new things, and I got the opportunity that was never given to a marketing assistant to any company. My boss is kind enough to introduce me to the big people in the industry. My boss is kind enough to send me to trainings and seminars.

I have grown to be a person who appreciate money and the value of it. I have grown to a person with patience for everything will come in time only when you worked hard for it. I have grown to be a person with strong willed attitude to be able to get my goals. I have grown to incorporate my personal goals with my working goals.

In anything that you do, you can never get the satisfaction when you are not happy doing it. I

All Juiced Up! For the Marketing Department

I am all pumped up to do some action.

In this week's marketing career, I will be trying to be a web designer. My goodness! Yes, I am not trying to make myself look like a fool. I am getting others to do it for me but of course I want to learn how to.

"All juiced up!" This is the slogan that I wanted to tell my team mates. We need to shag our tails and bump our head into each other, do some hola hoops for the ideas to come out.

Annual planning is coming up and your brain needs some baby back ribs from Fwendz Diner to think. Quesidilla too and Chimichanga? I hope I spell that right.

The 360 Degrees Outlook of Social Media

You would read it anywhere that the best way to make money is online. Yeah it is true, only when you are really good at it.

I've always encourage anyone to do blogging and earn through Google Adsense or Pay Per Post, or anything that is on the net. Yes, you can earn something from it but you got to make yourself good at it by spending more hours on how to write good posts for your blog or else others won't read it. No matter how good your posts are but then again you don't know any tricks on Google Adsense then you won't get a cent from Adsense.

Think about this, you will never be good unless you start it today.

Can You Really Earn from Blogging?

Like I always said, I am new to blogging. Here are things that I have learn from the few months of trying to earn extra money.

The reason why I wanted to continue blogging is that I can write possibly anything. I do restrict myself to blog only those that I think would be helpful. Through blogging, I have earned a little. Here's a tip. Normally a typical Filipino would love to earn big over night. That's is what I call Super Lotto Big Winner. In blogging, you have to write in the most honest way as possible. You could not just copy and paste someone else's blog on your blog. It is a no-no according to my friend Boink. In blogging, you have to write with emotions. No matter how attractive your Title Posts are, still nobody would like to read it. Again, you have to take a look at where you are and what you do so that it can have a connection to the blog that you are trying to make.

Let me give an example to that. I am a marketing assistant and every time I write a post for my blog I have to make it in line with what I am good at and that's how to market. I am proud to be a Filipino so I write things which can be helpful to Filipinos. I could not write about Singaporeans or other Asians nor Americans. Also, I have to consider that blogging in the Philippines is not that popular as to blogging in the United States of America. Although there are a lot of Filipino internet users but still not all have heard of blogging or at least understand blogging.

Can you really earn from blogging? Yes, you can earn from blogging. You just got to get it started and start with sense and emotions. I have earned that little because I am starting and I am positive I can earn more if I do continue to blog and not to expect to earn that big soon. Blogging is an art. For me, it is an abstract that needs a careful thinking.

What's a Brand?

In my work as a marketing assistant, I do not like to spend a day without a question. A question that is in line of making my job better thus it will create a better results for the company I am working with.

What is a brand? I have been talking about marketing for the last post that I made (credit goes to Jay Conrad Levinson, author of "Guerrilla Marketing") and it made me realize I wasn't talking about what is really a brand.

I've read on Seth's Blog:

What's a brand?

I think it is the product of two things:

[Prediction of what to expect] times [emotional power of that expectation].

If I encounter a brand and I don't know what it means or does, it has zero power. If I have an expectation of what an organization will do for me, but I don't care about that, no power.

Fedex is a powerful brand because you always get what you expect, and the relief you get from their consistency is high.

AT&T is a weak brand because you almost never get what you expect, because they do so many different things and because the value of what they create has little emotional resonance (it sure used to though, when they did one thing, they did it perfectly and they were the only ones who could connect you).

It says the brand has power because it answers your expectation. Was it that difficult? Not at all! You think of yourself as a customer, here you inquire in a bank of what are the requirements of opening an account. The person at the new accounts said that you need picture, ID and the opening deposit. She didn't smile at all. So here you are expecting that the staff and employees would be friendly. This was actually my experience. When I opened that account the only thing I knew is that I am opening an account with this money on hand. I do not know their policy so I was expecting it will be explained to me. I know that there are a lot of other customers to attend to but I felt I am not important and neither are the rest of us in that bank. Everyone is busy doing something and all the times they were not smiling.

My impression of a bank if that I will let them keep my money and I will have to trust them not just the name of the company. If they will commit mistake I will lose my trust with them, which they did they put it all my deposit into another account name and it made me mad. Trust not just with the staff that is operating the branch but to the name of the company. They did not make their promise so why do I have to trust them the second time around.

A brand is living to what you are telling your clients who you are. Giving them what you expect.

Dunkin Donuts: My Own Experience

After going through the usual daily routine of a walking marketer, I went inside the mall to get a cold drink and at the same time make myself cold. I ordered first at McDonalds, my favorite Coke Float. I asked for so many ice and sat at the corner where the AC is near and where it is colder. But I got too cold so I went out and ordered Hot Chocolate at Dunkin Donuts.

First thing you've noticed is the spelling of the "Medium" sized soft drink. Instead of "medium" they spell it "madium". Well of course it is wrong, and in marketing one of the crucial mistakes is when you commit mistakes and you know that it can easily be seen by the eye. A company's brand and image not only lies on the good choice of name but on the place you are situated, the choice of words and how you write it. There are a lot to consider but in Dunkin Donuts' sake, a simple mistake in spelling turns out to be a bad image for them. Aside from the lack of good customer service, and a clean place to eat, Dunkin Donuts has not made any corrections on that spelling and for me, it brings down their credibility.

As a marketing person, my first goal when I get to the office is to take a look at how clean the lobby is. This is the first place at MTC Academy that clients will take a look at. Second to that is if everyone is putting a smile on their faces. Third to that is making sure marketing collaterals such as flyers, brochures, tapraulins and others are clean. Even if the words are checked before they are printed I keep on reading them.

I wonder, how come Dunkin Donuts is still around? Well, they make good donuts. What do you think? Write down your comments, it will be a great thing to share not just to me but to others as well.

Walking Marketer

Only because the company is starting it does not mean that you got to buy a car for some people, especially for the marketing personnel to use to be able to get to the place they are supposed to do their marketing work. In guerrilla marketing, you got to walk to be able to evangelize your service. It is indeed a good exercise, but most people won't do what I am doing now.

If given the chance I would like to ask for a car so that I can use the car whenever I would do follow up and courtesy calls to my clients. Unfortunately, even a taxi ride, my company can afford it but due to cut budget, I am only allowed to use the jeepney ride.

During my first days at this company, I am so tired. Bloody hell! An 8 hours of sleep is not enough for a 5 hours marketing adventure everyday.

I love my job. It keep me updated, alert, and energetic all the time. I am a walking marketer. I don't care. Walking keep me in shape too. This is how I do my guerrilla marketing.

What about you? Are you a walking marketer like me?

12.9.07

Getting Creativity on Paper

In marketing, you need to know how to draw your creativity on paper especially when you are in advertising. Everyone of us can be creative. Many can't verbalize it in words. Many can't implement such creativity into drawing for better understanding.

I do get the problem sometimes. Before it is hard because I have to create a cartoon out of nothing. I have to select only those that can be used and most of the times, the pictures that I got from the Internet is a picture of so many background and so many other things included which is not going to be included in my lay-out. As a lay-out artist, I have to cut those parts that are not included. Sometimes, you couldn't get a better picture because the file is too small. In that case, you got to make a picture in your own.

I hate it when I am disappointed and the reason I am disappointed because of myself and no other than me. It is the worst part of being a one-man department. You go with your creativity but in the end you are not contented.

It is part of marketing though, but at the end of the day, I am quite happy how things worked out. It only mean I am capable of doing more things as to the usual that I do. Creative does not stop of thinking, but to be able to write it down and to even lay it out to impress your boss is needed. Marketing is action. What are you going to do when you are given this, do you move or you just stare at it and dream about it?

Rate this Book: " Guerilla Marketing" Part 2

Traditional marketing identifies the heavy weapons of marketing: radio, TV, newspapers, magazines, direct mail, and the Internet. Guerrilla marketing identifies two hundred weapons of marketing and many of them are free.

It is not that hard to find time to search what are those freebies that we can get outside without spending too much money on marketing our products or services. The author kept on saying be creative. Think of what is outside the box and how you can do that? Imagine yourself as the customer, and think of ways to suggest to give a better service or improve the product. Entrepreneurs right now does not mean owning a business of two or more. Entrepreneurs right now only has 2-3 employees maximizing time to built a name or a service that would stand and perhaps give a lasting impression that this idea of an entrepreneur will work. In order to do that, you got to arm yourself with inexpensive materials of marketing.
